One word leaders need to understand for the success of the church is develop.

The apostles continued to emphasize the need for the church to develop. Prayers expressed requests to help the church develop.

Developing faith and relationship with God is a vital responsibility of leadership. We must do the following:

Lead others to a greater love and understanding of truth.
Assist Christians in an understanding and involvement of their abilities in His service.
Encourage the expression of God’s grace through sharing the love of Christ at the cross.
Provide an example in all the above.

Leadership is about development. Let us get started.

The Cycle of Leadership…

A good friend of mine says leaders must constantly “assess, adjust, improve, make mistakes and own them.”

We could describe this as the cycle of leadership. The principle shows that leaders know who they are and always seek improvement.

One of the ways to accomplish this is by asking difficult questions.

Do we really want to be a leader?
What is the motivation behind our desire to lead?
Are we willing to make the necessary sacrifices to lead effectively?
Will we commit ourselves to the task of continually developing our abilities to lead?

These provide a foundation to help us know who we are and improve our approach to leadership.

Lead, Leader, Leadership…

“Lead is a verb, leader is a noun, and leadership is both.” Not sure who to credit with this thought, but it speaks volumes.

Leadership involves both the person and action.
Leadership speaks to both who we are and what we do.
Leadership requires an effort to develop both the individual and method.
Leadership drives home the necessity of personality and character.

We must keep in mind the development process of making great spiritual leaders. The constant dedication to the act of molding one’s ability to lead helps us become the leadership of God.

At every level, leaders are in high demand, from the political to the spiritual arena. In time of crisis what should we do? There are several possibilities.

1) Do nothing.
2) Deny there is a crisis and continue on the same course.
3) Ignore the crisis hoping it will take care of itself.
4) Procrastinate and allow the wrong leadership to take control.
5) Address the crisis with a plan of action to change the direction of the future.

The obvious solution is clear. Developing a plan of action requires us to account for the following.

1) Acknowledge the problem(s).
2) Examine the severity of the situation.
3) Remove the element(s) poisoning the situation.
4) Develop a support system for current leaders.
5) Begin an immediate course of preparing leaders for the future.

We can change the future, but we must act and we must act now!

The subject is as broad as it sounds and there are more questions to be asked than imaginable. Yet, the formation of an approach to adult leadership development is essential for the future.

One of the great downfalls of the current context of the church involves the struggles facing many congregations in the area of leadership.

Congregations are struggling with poorly equipped, and at times unqualified, leaders or no leadership at all. Sadly, far too many congregations of the Lord’s people have no idea who will fill the needed leadership positions in the days ahead.

A plan needs to developed in each congregation for the training, equipping, and developing leaders to prepare for the spiritual warfare that faces the church.

God’s people need to recognize the challenges before us and the current leadership of today must rise up to prepare leaders for tomorrow.

We should all be aware of the consequences of failing to plan for adult leadership development. What we need is a vision of the benefits for the Lord’s kingdom that will be experienced in the next generation. This will impact our children!

To cause to grow and become more mature or advanced.

If there was one word leaders need to understand for the success of the church, it would be develop.

Throughout the writings of the apostles, they continued to emphasize the need for the church to develop. Prayers expressed requests for God to help the church develop.

The goal of teaching was to present every person mature in Christ. God gave gifts to various individuals for the purposing of helping the church achieve unity and maturity in the faith. We also find the use of imperative language regarding Peter’s instruction for Christians to grow.

Developing faith in a relationship with God is a vital responsibility of leadership.

We must lead others to a greater love and understanding of the word of truth.

We must assist Christians in an understanding and involvement of their God given abilities in His service.

We must encourage the expression of God’s grace through sharing the love of Christ at the cross.

We must provide an example in all the above.

Leadership is about development. Let us get started.
