Nothing New In Leadership…

In our lifetime, the church has experienced several changes. Some changes have been good and some destructive. While changes occur today, it is safe to say, more changes will come.

Paul Harvey said, “In times like these it is good to remember that there have always been times like these.”

Solomon originally expressed it this way, “There is nothing new under the sun.”

Leaders will always face challenges. It may be a different generation, culture, gender, age, or time of day, but challenges will come.

Let us seek God’s counsel and listen to His word. Here we will find the true answers to solve these challenges.

Wisdom in Leadership…

The Bible describes many contrasts. Few seem as powerful as the contrast between wisdom and foolishness.

Solomon said the wise quickly receive instruction.

Paul instructs us to act as wise men not as unwise.

Jesus indicated the wise to be those who hear His words and act upon them. The foolish hear His words and do not.

There should be much wisdom in spiritual leaders. Let us learn to receive wise counsel.

Ultimately, our leadership is based on the direction we receive from the Lord. True wisdom listens to Him.

The most valuable commodity we have is time. The greatest gift we can give is our time. Leading people requires time. We all have the same amount. How we use it determines the difference we make as leaders.

Solomon said there is a time for everything.

From his birth to death, Jesus was on God’s time. Paul wrote “in the fullness of time God sent forth His Son.” Approaching his final days, Jesus prayed, “Father, the hour has come.”

Paul instructs Christians to use their time wisely because the days are evil.

In this crazy, busy, scheduled life we live as leaders, how are we using our time?

A study of leaders and leadership reveals a plethora of information that presents a daunting task of determining what is right and who is the right leader to follow.

Solomon was certainly right when he said, “The writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body” (Ec. 12:12).

However, God provided us with a book that reveals information sufficient for what is right and the right leader to follow.

No greater qualities for leadership are identified today than those addressed throughout the pages of the Bible.

No greater example of leadership can be found than the example left by Jesus.

Dedicating ourselves to learning the truths provided by God and studying the example of Jesus will result in a godly leader.

There is no better way to honor and glorify the God we serve than by leading with our eyes focused on Jesus and our hearts devoted to the following the depths of His word.

When followers have this example in earthly leaders, they will follow the right leader.

0 Wise Leadership…

Wisdom involves experience, knowledge and good judgment. From a practical point of view, wisdom is the proper application of knowledge.

Biblically, one of the most notable illustrations of wise leadership is found in the Old Testament in King Solomon. The request of Solomon was an understanding heart to rule God’s people, and the result ushered in a king unlike any before or after him in Israel’s history. This does not mean that Solomon was without faults, but God did grant his request.

The challenge for leaders today is seeking the right source of wisdom. Scripture is clear and the application is significant.

Leaders who seek wisdom should ask God for it. When dealing with the trials of life, God is willing to give wisdom to those who ask in faith.

The qualities of God’s wisdom must be known and practiced: pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Wisdom can be learned by experience and from others. Using both allows leaders to base their leadership on the guidance provided by God.

0 Godly Counsel…

A contrast of counsel is found throughout the Psalms and Proverbs. We are urged not to walk in the counsel of the wicked in Psalm 1. Later in the Psalms, David expresses the need to wait for the counsel of the Lord, because His counsel will endure forever.

Solomon claims a wise man is one who listens to wise counsel, and one who possess understanding will acquire wise counsel.

One of the best Proverbs about counsel is found in Proverbs 27:9 where we read, “A man’s counsel is sweet to his friend.”

Leadership should always provide a source of counsel that is based on the word of God, designed to provide guidance to spiritual success and an eternal reward.

When leaders provide godly counsel, several beautiful things occur: 1) Above all, God is glorified; 2) His people are built up in the faith; 3) leadership is strengthened in righteousness; and 4) the future is secured.

The consequences of not seeking wise counsel can be seen in the life of Joshua (Jos. 9). Let leaders learn today from his example, then pursue and provide godly counsel.

0 Strength in Numbers…

Several years ago a friend of mind asked me the one thing I had learned in all my study of the Bible. He followed up by saying, “Always remember, you can’t make it on your own.”

The lesson I learned that day left a lasting impact on my life and ministry.

I am reminded of the thought expressed by Solomon; “Two are better than one.” Notice the reasons listed by Solomon: 1) Good return for their labor, 2) Lift up the other if one falls, 3) Keep each other warm when lying down together, and 4) If someone tries to overpower one who is alone, two can resist him. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

His argues, “A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.”

The idea helps us understand there is strength in numbers. Satan, our adversary, wants us alone because he knows we are more vulnerable.

Leadership is no exception. Leaders need to work together to encourage one another, grow to maturity, and defeat the enemy.

The strength leaders gain from being together will lay a foundation for future leaders.

0 Glory of the Lord…

The phrase “glory of the Lord” is found approximately 24 times in the Old Testament. The expression is generally connected to the tabernacle or temple.

The glory of the Lord appeared in the tent of meeting where Moses spoke with God “face-to-face.” We also find the glory of the Lord filling the temple at the completion and dedication given by Solomon. Even Isaiah saw the earth full of His glory as the temple filled with smoke.

The appearing of God’s glory in these ways indicates the desire of God to dwell among and with His people. The greatest indication of this is found in the incarnation of Jesus.

John records, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth” Jn. 1:14.

The coming of Jesus opened our understanding to Immanuel, “God with us.” How powerful to consider His presence at every step in our journey through life.

How beautiful to consider the way He works through us to be present in leading others.

0 Potential Hindrance…

We live in an extremely reactive culture. We tend to react to something said or done without giving appropriate thought to the impact of our reaction.

To weigh out our words and the nature of them is an art long past forgotten, or perhaps, abandoned.

Recently, our oldest son dealt with a leadership issue on the job. His thought, as it was expressed to the individual involved, was significant enough it deserves repeating: “Every conversation is important. When a specific wording is missed or an inappropriate judgment made, it can temporarily or permanently stunt another person’s potential to grow in leadership.”

If we understood how our words might promote or hinder the leadership potential of another person, would we give more careful thought to what we say?

Solomon reminds us that the power of life and death are in the tongue, and the book of James reminds us of the unruly nature of the tongue. With our words we either build up or tear down.

We must not allow anything to influence our words in such a manner that would discourage someone from reaching their leadership potential.
